The Story: A Different Side of the UAE

The Hajar Mountains setting the tone - rugged, quiet, and built for exploring on two wheels.

I became a little obsessed with Hatta whilst I lived in Dubai.

It’s a small mountain town that sits just beyond Dubai, but feels like a completely different country.

The roads open up, the terrain turns rugged, and the air feels noticeably fresher.

If Dubai is built for luxury, Hatta is built for adventure.

Starting at Wadi Hub

Everything begins at Wadi Hub. This is where most Hatta mountain biking routes begin, with everything set up to get you out onto the trails quickly.

This is where you park, rent your bike, and get your bearings before heading out into the mountains.

The setup is simple and well organised. You don’t need to book - just turn up, choose your bike, and the staff will talk you through the routes.

Bike Rental

  • Price: AED 65–85 per hour

  • Helmet included

  • No booking required

If you’ve got your own bike, you can ride the trails for free.

The Trails: Built for Everyone

There’s around 52km of trails winding through the Hajar mountains, with routes clearly marked by difficulty:

  • Green → beginner

  • Blue → intermediate

  • Black → advanced

I went for one of the green routes (Green 3), which is ideal if you’re just getting started.

No long, punishing climbs - just enough elevation to keep things interesting.

What It’s Actually Like to Ride

The trails are genuinely fun.

You’re not just riding in a straight line — the terrain constantly changes.

  • Short climbs

  • Fast descents

  • Bridges

  • Wadi crossings

  • Open mountain views

It feels like a proper adventure, but without needing high-level technical ability.

A Note on Direction (Important)

All trails are one-way.

It sounds obvious, but it’s important - don’t turn back on yourself.

The routes are designed to flow in one direction, and riding against that puts you at risk of colliding with other riders.

The Setting: Hajar Mountains and Wadis

One of the standout parts of cycling here is the landscape.

You’ll pass through wadis - dried river beds that cut through the mountains - and ride with constant views across the Hajar range.

It’s raw, rocky terrain, and completely different to the Dubai most people expect.

Is It Worth It?

Yes — particularly if you’re looking for something active and accessible.

This isn’t elite-level mountain biking.

That’s the point.

It’s:

  • Easy to organise

  • Beginner-friendly without being boring

  • A genuine outdoor experience

  • Close enough to Dubai for a half-day trip

If you want to get into mountain biking in the UAE, this is one of the best places to do it.

How to Plan It Properly

Getting There

  • Take the E44 from Dubai towards Hatta

  • Follow signs through Hatta town

  • Wadi Hub is just after the main roundabout on the right

Drive time from Dubai: 75 minutes

What to Bring

  • Water (essential)

  • Snacks for longer rides

  • Sports clothing

  • Towel (you’ll need it)

  • Fully charged phone

Best Time to Go

  • Early morning (I got into a habit of getting up to Wadi Hub for 7am at the weekend and I was back in Dubai for lunchtime)

  • Avoid midday heat

  • Winter months are ideal

Build This Into a Trip

Hatta works well as:

  • A half-day escape from Dubai

  • Part of an overnight stay (plenty of accommodation nearby)

  • Combined with kayaking or hiking in the area

Final Thoughts

A quick stop on the trail - part ride, part escape from the city heat.

Hatta was one of the first places I explored when I started looking beyond the cities in the UAE.

Cycling here felt like a shift - away from roads and routine, and into something more active and adventurous.

The setup at Wadi Hub makes it easy to get started, but the landscape is what stays with you.

If you’re looking to get into mountain biking in the UAE, this is a very good place to begin.
