What is Hatta Kayak?

Hatta Kayak is set on the reservoir created by the Hatta Dam, surrounded by the rocky Hajar Mountains on the border with Oman.

It’s a simple concept — turn up, rent a kayak, and head out onto the water - but the setting is what makes it special.

Instead of open sea or rivers, you’re paddling through still, turquoise water with mountains dropping straight into the lake around you.

It’s one of those places that doesn’t quite make sense until you’re there.

How to kayak at Hatta Dam

Getting there

Hatta Kayak is easily found on Google Maps and is around a 90–120 minute drive from Dubai depending on traffic.

Getting started

When you arrive, you’ll park at the base of the dam where there’s a large car park and basic facilities.

From there, it’s a short walk up a staircase to the water level where the Hatta Kayak kiosk is located.

What happens when you arrive

At the kiosk, you can choose your kayak or water bike and pay either by cash or card. There’s no need to book in advance — just arrive, choose your activity and get started.

You’ll be given a life jacket and directed down to the pontoon, where staff will help you get set up before heading out onto the water.

It’s all very straightforward — no booking needed, no complicated process.

What it’s like on the water

Once you push away from the pontoon, the whole place opens up.

The water is calm, the mountains feel close, and there’s no set route — you can explore at your own pace, paddling into small inlets or just drifting and taking it in.

If you go early enough, it can feel almost silent out there.

How much does Hatta Kayak cost?

One of the best things about Hatta Kayak is how simple the pricing is — and the fact that most options are unlimited time.

  • Single kayak: AED 60 (unlimited)

  • Double kayak: AED 120 (unlimited)

  • Single water bike: AED 60 (unlimited)

  • Double water bike: AED 120 (unlimited)

  • Triple water bike: AED 180 (unlimited)

  • Family boat (4 people): AED 150 (1 hour)

Once you’ve paid, you can stay out on the water as long as you like (except for the family boat).

Food and facilities at Hatta Kayak

Hatta Kayak has developed beyond just a rental spot. There are now café-style food options and shaded seating areas overlooking the water, making it easy to spend a full morning or afternoon here.

You can grab coffee, cold drinks and light food either before or after heading out on the water, which adds to the overall experience — especially if you’re making a half-day trip of it.

When to go

The best time to visit Hatta Kayak is early in the morning. Hatta Kayak has around 100 kayaks available, so going early also means you have a better chance of getting on the water straight away.

Opening hours typically run from early morning until evening (around 7am-7pm or later depending on season and weather).

You’ll get calmer water, cooler temperatures, and far fewer people — which completely changes the experience.

In the middle of the day, especially in summer, the heat can be intense and there’s very little shade out on the water. And just to point out, swimming is not permitted in the reservoir, so in the hotter months you’re fully exposed to the heat while out on the water.

Winter months are ideal if you’re visiting the UAE.

Why Hatta is more than just kayaking

Hatta sits around 130km from Dubai, tucked into the Hajar Mountains near the Oman border.

What was once a quiet mountain town is now one of the UAE’s main outdoor adventure hubs. Alongside kayaking, you’ve got mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding and more, all centred around Hatta Wadi Hub.

It’s an easy day trip from Dubai, but also somewhere you can build a full weekend around if you want to slow things down.

Is it worth it? (Final thoughts)

A million miles from the hustle and bustle of the city - kayaking in the middle of the UAE desert at Hatta.

Hatta Kayak is one of those experiences that surprises you.

You don’t expect to find calm water, mountain scenery and a sense of stillness in the middle of the UAE desert — but that’s exactly what you get.

It’s easy to do, doesn’t require much planning, and works whether you’re travelling solo, as a couple or just looking for something different for a morning out.

It’s also one of the most photogenic spots in the UAE — particularly in the early morning light when the water is still.

If you’re new to exploring the UAE beyond the cities, this is a great place to start.
