Reaching the Hatta Sign in the Hajar Mountains — one of the UAE’s most recognisable hiking landmarks.

A practical guide to hiking to the UAE’s Hatta Sign (route, tips, and is it worth it?)

Hatta has become Dubai’s adventure playground, and with Hatta Wadi Hub at its centre, there’s plenty to get stuck into.

But if you want something simple, accessible, and completely free, hiking to the Hatta Sign is one of the best ways to experience the area.

I took on the walk to see whether reaching this UAE landmark feels as iconic as its Hollywood inspiration.

Watch the full journey on YouTube below.

What is the Hatta Sign hike?

The Hatta Sign hike is a marked trail in Hatta — a mountain town on the UAE’s border with Oman, within the Emirate of Dubai.

Once a quiet summer retreat due to its slightly cooler temperatures, Hatta has evolved into one of the UAE’s key outdoor destinations — where hiking, mountain biking and kayaking all sit within easy reach.

The hike itself is moderate and varied, following wadis (dry river beds) and rocky mountain paths as you climb towards the Hatta Sign, set into the Hajar Mountains.

All trails begin from Hatta Wadi Hub and are clearly signposted, making navigation straightforward if you know which route to follow.

Hatta Sign hike route (step-by-step)

If you just want the route without overthinking it, here’s the full path to the Hatta Sign:

  1. Start at the hiking trail entrance at Hatta Wadi Hub

  2. Take Green 1 towards the Reem signpost

  3. Continue on Green 1 towards Thamaam

  4. From Thamaam, take Green 4 (wadi route) or Green 3 to Ja’ada

  5. From Ja’ada, join Blue 1 towards Qa’taa

  6. Continue onto Blue 2 towards Dhabi

  7. Stay on Blue 2 and follow signs to Wael (the Hatta Sign)

The return route is exactly the same back to Hatta Wadi Hub.

The signage on the trails is good, but knowing the route in advance makes the hike much smoother.

How to find the Hatta Sign (route guide)

Step 1: Start on the Green Trail

The route begins on the Green One path from Hatta Wadi Hub, easing you in through light vegetation until you reach the 'Reem' signpost.

Step 2: Follow Reem → Thamaam → Ja’ada

From Reem, continue towards Thamaam.

At Thamaam, you can go left or right — take the right-hand option, which follows a wadi and is the more enjoyable route.

You’ll eventually reach Ja’ada, where the terrain begins to shift.

Step 3: Join the Blue Trail towards the mountains

At Ja’ada, you leave the Green Trail and join the Blue Trail.

Head right towards Qataa, then continue towards Dhabi.

This is where the landscape opens up — and you’ll catch your first glimpse of the Hatta Sign, framed between two peaks.

Step 4: Final climb via Wael

At the Dhabi waypoint, follow signs to Wael — this is key.

This section is the steepest part of the hike, but it’s relatively short.

After the climb, the trail flattens out and brings you in behind the Hatta Sign.

Arrival: The Hatta Sign

The structure itself is bigger than you expect — steel-framed, slightly industrial, and sitting proudly above the surrounding valleys.

The view out across Hatta is what really makes the effort worthwhile.

Important: On trail maps, the Hatta Sign is labelled as “Wael” — not “Hatta Sign”.

The return

The return follows the same route back down.

Once back at Hatta Wadi Hub, there are cafes and facilities if you want to refuel.

The hike in a nutshell

How long does the Hatta Sign hike take?

The hike typically takes 2–3 hours return, depending on pace and stops.

It’s straightforward overall, with just two notable climbs — the second being the steepest.

It feels like a compact, manageable adventure — ideal for a half-day trip or a family outing.

What to bring

  • 2–3 litres of water

  • Snacks / lunch if you don’t want to spend at Wadi Hub

  • Good trainers or hiking shoes

  • Hat and sunscreen

  • Charged phone

Is it worth hiking to the Hatta Sign? (Final Thoughts)

Hiking to the Hatta Sign at Hatta Wadi Hub in the UAE mountains
Up close at the Hatta Sign after a steady climb from Hatta Wadi Hub.

The Hatta Sign is a fun, accessible day out.

It’s not quite on the scale of its Hollywood equivalent, but within the UAE, it’s become a recognisable and slightly symbolic spot.

If you live in the UAE, it’s one of those things worth ticking off — but realistically, it’s probably a one-time experience.

The hike itself is enjoyable rather than spectacular, but as an introduction to hiking in the UAE — especially with kids or beginners — it works really well.
