A UAE walk with flowing fresh water — something you don’t expect, and don’t forget.
I didn’t expect to hear the sound of running water on a walk in the UAE.
Not real, natural, constant flowing water.
But that’s exactly what Wadi Shees delivers — a short, accessible trail surrounded by greenery, palm trees and the kind of soundtrack you normally only find far outside this part of the world.
At a Glance
Location: Wadi Shees, Sharjah (near Khor Fakkan)
Type: Short nature trail / walk
Duration: 45–60 minutes
Price: Free
Why go: One of the only places in the UAE with flowing fresh water year-round
Key tip: Fuel up before the S142 road - no petrol stations
Watch the full journey on YouTube below.
The drive to Wadi Shees (part of the experience)
The S142 road and mountain tunnels
Getting to Wadi Shees is part of the adventure.
From the E611, you’ll head east onto the S142 - the road that cuts through the Hajar Mountains towards Khor Fakkan.
It’s a brilliant drive.
Long tunnels carved through the mountains, smooth roads, and a sense you’re heading somewhere different.
You’ll only pass through one tunnel before you turn-off just past the 'Welcome to Khor Fakkan' sign. You will then drive past Shees Park and after following the road downhill for a few minutes you will see the start point to the nature trail.
If you’ve got time after the walk, get back in the car and continue to Khor Fakkan for even more adventures.
Important tip (learned the hard way)
At the time I went on this adventure in 2020, there were no petrol stations on the S142.
I came close to finding that out the difficult way.
Top up before you go, just incase none have been added since my visit.
Walking the Wadi Shees Nature Trail
First impressions
The trail starts right next to the car park, with a clear information board showing the route.
Within minutes, everything changes.
You step into greenery. Proper greenery. And then…
You hear it.
Water.
The staircase and the view

You’ll climb a staircase (recently refurbished), and as you rise, the views open up:
Date palm trees below
Hajar Mountains behind
A landscape that feels completely out of place in the UAE
And all the while, that sound of water is getting closer.
The old village of Shees
At the top, the trail leads you into the old village of Shees.
It was once a busy settlement and a place regularly visited by the ruler of Sharjah, HH Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi.
Now, it’s quieter — used only by local farmers — but full of character.
Take a moment here. The information boards are genuinely worth reading.
The Falaj system (and why there’s water here at all)

This is what makes Wadi Shees so unique.
The flowing water comes from a Falaj system, built over 3000 years ago.
It channels rainwater from the mountains into farmland and communities — and remarkably, it’s still working today.
In a country that receives less than 100mm of rain per year, that’s extraordinary.
Walking alongside the water

As you follow the trail:
You walk alongside the Falaj channels
You cross over them
You hear the constant flow beneath you
It’s a sound you don’t realise you miss in the UAE… until you hear it again.
Why this walk is different
I’ve always been drawn to water.
Rivers. Lakes. Waterfalls. Anything with movement and sound.
In the UAE, that’s not something you come across often.
So when you do - when you find a place like Wadi Shees — it sticks.
It’s not just a change of scenery.
It’s a change of feeling.
The route and finish
After passing through the village and following the Falaj system:
The trail leads you down steps back to the road
From there, it’s a short walk back to where you parked
Simple. Accessible. Easy to follow.
Is it worth it? (Final thoughts)

Wadi Shees isn’t the most dramatic hike in the UAE.
But that’s not the point.
It’s one of the most surprising.
A place where you swap desert silence for flowing water, and where a short walk gives you something completely different to anything else in the country.
And that’s exactly why it’s worth doing.
