A practical guide to a hot air balloon ride in Dubai (cost, timing, what to expect)
A hot air balloon over the Arabian Desert sounds like one of those things you should do in Dubai.
But it’s also an early start, not particularly cheap, and takes you well outside the city.
So the real question is simple:
is it actually worth it?
I took a sunrise flight with Hero Balloon Flights (formerly Balloon Adventures Dubai) to see what the experience is actually like — and whether it’s worth building into a trip.

What the experience is actually like
The early start (and why it matters)
This isn’t a casual morning.
You’re picked up at around 4:30am and driven out of Dubai, away from the skyline and into open desert.
It’s dark when you arrive, quiet and certainly cooler than you expect.
Whilst the desert may seem calm through the early morning stillness, the pre-flight preparations soon awaken your senses and prepare you for altitude.
Take-off in the desert
Watching the balloon inflate is part of the experience.
Hundreds of thousands of cubic feet of hot air fill the envelope, and within minutes something that looked flat on the ground is towering above you.
Then you climb in and with ease, the basket has left the ground.
It's a graceful departure, leaving behind the noise and chatter on the ground and climbing to a much more peaceful time in the air.
Floating over the Arabian Desert

The scale becomes clear
This is where it shifts.
From the ground, the desert feels like landscape. From the air, it feels like something much bigger.
The dunes stretch endlessly, with no real reference points — just patterns of light and shadow moving across the sand.
Sunrise over the Hajar Mountains
Off in the distance, the Hajar Mountains start to catch the light.
They mark the edge of the desert — and give you just enough contrast to understand how vast the sand actually is.
It’s not dramatic in a loud way.
It’s quiet. Slow. Almost still.
What you actually see from 4,000 feet
At peak height, you’re high enough to take it all in:
rolling dune systems
shifting light across the sand
mountain range on the horizon
and, on a clear day, a distant hint of Dubai
High above, it's easy to understand why a large part of the Arabian Desert is called 'The Empty Quarter'.
Practical things to know before you book
1. It’s an early and structured experience
This isn’t flexible.
Timings are tight because everything revolves around sunrise.
If you’re not up for a 4:30am start, this probably isn’t for you.
2. It’s a premium experience
Hot air ballooning in Dubai sits towards the higher end of activity pricing.
You’re paying for:
logistics
safety
location
and conditions
It’s not a casual add-on.
3. The add-ons are part of the package
Most experiences include:
vintage Land Rover desert drive
breakfast at a desert camp
It turns it into a half-day experience, not just a flight.
4. Weather matters more than you think
Flights depend on conditions.
Wind and visibility can affect take-off, so there’s always a small element of unpredictability.
Who to book a hot air balloon ride with in Dubai
Main operators
Hero Balloon Flights (formerly Balloon Adventures Dubai)
The most established operator and the one I flew with, known for well-run sunrise experiences.
Platinum Heritage
A higher-end option that combines ballooning with premium desert experiences.
Arabian Adventures
One of the UAE’s largest and most recognisable tour operators.
Hot Air Balloon UAE
A more accessible option that still offers the core sunrise balloon experience.
Most providers offer a very similar flight experience, with the main differences coming in group size, pricing and what’s included before and after the flight.
Is a hot air balloon ride in Dubai worth it?

Yes — but only if you want to understand the desert properly.
If you’re looking for something high-energy or fast-paced, this won’t be it.
But if you want:
a different perspective on Dubai
a sense of scale you don’t get from the city
and one genuinely memorable morning
Then it’s one of the more meaningful experiences you can do.
It’s not about adrenaline.
It’s about perspective.
