What is the Al Rabi Tower hike?
The Al Rabi Tower hike begins at a historic watchtower built in 1915, once used to guard the coastal city of Khor Fakkan.
Today, it marks the starting point of one of the most rewarding summit hikes in the UAE.
From here, a well-laid trail climbs steadily into the mountains, eventually leading to a high vantage point overlooking the coastline, port and surrounding peaks.
It’s the combination of history, accessibility and the final view that makes this hike stand out.
Starting the hike at Al Rabi Tower

The hike officially begins at Al Rabi Tower, which sits above Khor Fakkan in a commanding position overlooking the city.
After parking at the base, a short walk up the tarmac road brings you to the tower itself - a natural pause point before setting off.
Benches and viewing spots make it worth taking a moment here. The view already gives you a sense of what’s to come.
The route and what to expect

The first climb
The opening section is the toughest part of the hike. A steady climb for around one to two hours, depending on your pace, takes you up to the first peak.
There’s very little shade, so starting early makes a big difference.
Shortcut or first peak?
At around the 1500m mark, you’ll reach a rest point where you can choose:
Continue up to the first peak
Or take a right onto a flatter trail towards the campsite
If you’ve got the energy, the first peak is worth it. But the shortcut is a good option if you want to conserve energy for the summit.
The campsite and views
Both routes eventually lead to a campsite area - a small flat section with some shade.
From here, the views open up.
You’ll see the Gulf of Oman stretching out, ships anchored offshore, and the mountains falling sharply towards the coastline below.
Views, the ‘secret beach’ and Khor Fakkan

From the campsite and along the trail, the scenery constantly shifts.
To one side, the Gulf of Oman glistens with container ships waiting offshore.
Below, what looks like a secluded ‘secret beach’ catches your eye - visible, but out of reach.
Turn the other way and Khor Fakkan appears framed between the mountains, its coastline curving around the bay.
It’s this contrast - mountains, sea and city all in one view - that makes this hike stand out.
The final climb to the summit
The last section takes around 30 minutes and leads you up towards the summit, marked by a large UAE flag.
The trail is clear, with some rocks to navigate but nothing technical.
At the top, everything opens up.
You’re standing above the city, the coastline stretching out below, mountains behind you, ocean in front.
It’s a proper summit moment.
Is this the best summit view in the UAE?

It might be.
There are higher hikes in the UAE, and tougher ones too, but few deliver this kind of payoff so cleanly.
The closest comparison is something like Table Mountain - a high viewpoint overlooking a city, coastline and port all at once.
It’s not just the height. It’s the setting.
About Khor Fakkan
Khor Fakkan sits on the east coast of the UAE and is part of Sharjah, despite being separated from the main emirate by Fujairah.
Its natural deep-sea port has made it strategically important for centuries, once contested by Portuguese and Omani forces.
Today, it’s a quieter coastal city - and the perfect base for this hike.
The route back down

The descent follows the same route, with the option to take the shortcut this time.
On the way down, the perspective changes. You’re now facing Khor Fakkan almost the entire way, with uninterrupted views back towards the coast.
It’s a different experience to the climb - and arguably just as good.
Final Thoughts

The Al Rabi Tower hike is one of the most complete hikes in the UAE.
It’s accessible, well-marked and delivers a proper summit experience without needing advanced hiking skills.
If you want a hike that gives you a real sense of progression and rewards you at the top, this is one of the best places to start.
