Following my guide Roger into the mangroves - a completely different side of Abu Dhabi.

A completely different side of the UAE - quiet waterways, dense mangroves and a kayaking experience you probably didn’t expect.

The Abu Dhabi Mangroves are one of those places that completely shifts your perception of the UAE from superstructures to natural beauty.

In a country better known for desert landscapes and city skylines, this is something else entirely - calm water, dense greenery and a network of winding channels that feel a world away from everything else around you.

What are the Abu Dhabi mangroves?

The mangroves stretch across more than seven square miles of protected coastal waterways, forming one of the most important ecosystems in the UAE.

These shallow channels and dense forests act as natural coastal protection, while also supporting a wide range of marine and bird life.

It’s a completely different environment to the rest of the country - and that contrast is what makes it so compelling.

Exploring the mangroves by kayak

Guided vs self-guided

You can explore the mangroves in two ways:

  • Self-guided kayak hire — simple, flexible and affordable

  • Guided tours — more structure, deeper insight

I headed out on a guided tour with Noukhada Adventure, led by Roger - whose knowledge of the mangroves added a completely different layer to the experience.

Having a guide means:

  • You don’t miss the best routes

  • You learn about the environment

  • You get context you wouldn’t otherwise have

What the experience is like

Deeper into the mangroves where the channels narrow and the landscape closes in around you.

From the moment you set off, everything slows down.

The water is calm, and the only sound is your paddle cutting through it.

You’ll move through:

  • Open lagoons

  • Narrow mangrove tunnels

  • Shaded channels surrounded by dense greenery

At times, the mangroves close in around you, creating tight passages that feel like a maze.

‘Divorce channel’

‘Divorce channel’ - tight, awkward and surprisingly fun to navigate.

One of those passages has picked up the nickname ‘divorce channel’.

It’s tight, awkward and requires a bit of coordination to get through without bumping into the sides - or each other.

The name has come from the many times couples have argued for space through the narrow corridor, so perhaps this is not for you if you are on honeymoon in Abu Dhabi.

Why the mangroves matter

Mangroves are often referred to as the “green lungs” of coastal regions.

They:

  • Absorb carbon dioxide

  • Help protect against rising sea levels

  • Support marine ecosystems

In Abu Dhabi, that role is especially important.

Roger was full of facts throughout, but one stuck more than anything - around 75% of fish in the Arabian Gulf begin life within these mangroves, making the Abu Dhabi mangroves vital not just locally, but across the wider region.

Wildlife in the mangroves

Out in the open sections of the mangroves where everything slows down.

The area is home to over 60 species of wildlife.

On a typical paddle, you might spot:

  • Crabs moving along the roots

  • Birdlife across the channels

  • Fish beneath the surface

It’s not a high-adrenaline wildlife experience - but it adds another layer to the environment you’re moving through.

Where to start your kayak

Most tours and rentals operate from the Eastern Mangroves area, near the The Mangroves Abu Dhabi, LXR Hotels & Resorts.

This is where you’ll find:

  • Kayak operators (including Noukhada Adventure)

  • Access points to the waterways

  • Parking and facilities

Booking and practical details

  • Prices: From AED 60 (self-guided), tours vary

  • Best times: Early morning (8am) or late afternoon (4pm)

  • Operator: Noukhada Adventure (recommended for guided tours)

  • Parking: Available at Eastern Mangroves

Tip:

Guided tours are often discounted at off-peak times, making them excellent value.

When is the best time to go?

Timing makes a big difference here.

  • Morning: cooler, quieter, calmer water

  • Late afternoon: softer light, more atmospheric

Midday is possible, but the heat and glare take away from the experience.

Final Thoughts

A guided tour with Noukhada Adventure - easily the best way to understand what you’re actually exploring.

Kayaking the Abu Dhabi mangroves is one of the most surprising experiences in the UAE.

It’s not about scale or spectacle.

It’s about slowing down, exploring and seeing a completely different side of the country.

And that’s exactly why it’s worth doing.
