Ultimate Guide to Attending the
Abu Dhabi Golf Championships
The Abu Dhabi Golf Championships is always a really fun event to go to and is located on Yas Island meaning visitors have so much to do when not walking the stunning Yas Links golf course.
The tournament used to be staged in January and was seen as the first big tournament of a new DP World Tour season. From 2024 however, the tournament has been re-scheduled and is now played the week before the season ending DP World Tour Championship, creating a two-week finale for the DP World Tour in the United Arab Emirates.
The weather in Abu Dhabi in November is often perfect for those long walks around the a golf course and Yas Links provides a really great location to watch golf from. The course is inspired by the very best Scottish Links courses, and with bright blue skies, pristine clear waters and miles of mangroves brodering the course, it all creates a heavingly golfing location.
If you love your golf, big sporting events and sunshine then the Abu Dhabi Golf Championships is a brilliant sporting occasion to choose.
About the Abu Dhabi Golf Championships
If you are an F1 fan, you'll a lot about Yas Marina Circuit and the Abu Dhabi Golf Championships is yet another huge sporting event that is held on Abu Dhabi's Yas Island.
Famous for it's sporting venues and theme parks, the island is a flurry of activity when there is an event on and provides a brilliant sports travel location. On the island you can find your hotels, shops, beaches, bars and restaurants just a moment away from Yas Links, where the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship is played.
The course itself is an 18-hole championship course and for the majority, runs parallel to Yas Marina Circuit's longest straight. It's one of very few sporting venues that sits directly next to another sporting venue and captures the essence of what us sports travel fans love.
Whilst the weather in Abu Dhabi at this time of year is glorious, it can rain now and again. Did you see the storms on the UAE in 2024? With that in mind, it's perhaps always best just to pack a waterproof jacket should you need one. I've been at the championships when it has rained, and a light waterproof comes in handy! On the whole though, you'll find shorts and t-shirts are the way to go. A good pair of trainers is reccomended, Yas Links has quite a few dunes and mounds to tackle as you walk around.
You'll always have a huge field of Europe's top golfers playing the tournament, especially now that it leads directly into the season-ending DP World Championship. The likes of Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood, Shane Lowry, Matthew Fitzpatrick and XXXX are always present on Yas Links so expect to see some world-class golf.
The tournament always provides a brilliant Championship Village which includes a huge merchandise store as you walk in, games and loads of food and beverage options. The tournament's sponsor HSBC host really great activities for the whole family from mini-tennis, kids zones and rugby games as well as golf activities of course. With all of this combined, there is no doubting there's a real family vibe to the event.
The Abu Dhabi Golf Championships is well worth attending. It's a great way of seeing some of the best golfers in the world, enjoy a brilliant day out with the family and experience all that Yas Island has to offer.

Where to stay
Do the Abu Dhabi Golf Championships in luxury
W Hotel, Yas Island:
Good news! There are still rooms available at the W Hotel, the hotel that straddle the Yas Marina Circuit. Bad news, it'll set you back at least £11,000 for a 3-night stay over the F1 weekend. It is of course an unbelievable hotel to stay in, and on an F1 weekend you'll probably have a driver in the next room to you.
Hilton Yas Island:
The Hilton Yas Island is up there with one of my favourite hotels on Yas Island. It has a stunning coastline location and a boulevard right outside the back of the hotel full of restaurants, bars and walks and would be a perfect retreat after a day at the track.
The WB Abu Dhabi:
If having breakfast with Tom & Jerry floats your boat, then you should stay at the WB. It's the Warner Bros. themed hotel where you'll find memorabilia from Warner Bros. blockbuster movies such as props, artwork and characters. Located on Yas Island with Yas Marina Circuit within walking distance.
Affordable hotels for the Abu Dhabi Golf Championships
Doubletree by Hilton, Yas Island
Novotel Abu Dhabi:
Both of these options are further into the city of Abu Dhabi and offer a more cost-effective option for accommodation but still within easy reach of Yas Marina Circuit by taxi.

The budget hotel option for the Abu Dhabi Golf Championships
As you can imagine, hotel prices in Abu Dhabi on the weekend of the Grand Prix are higher than normal. But another option you have is staying in Dubai and commuting to each race-day at Yas Marina Circuit. Given the circuit's location on Yas Island, it's actually not that far to Dubai. Around a 45 minute drive in a taxi. If you're looking at Dubai, make sure you are at the Dubai Marina end of the city which is the closest to Abu Dhabi, and the reward you get for being a little further away from the circuit is hotel prices for around half the price.
Local Transport
Whilst Abu Dhabi is a modern metropolis one thing it perhaps lacks a little in is public transport options. There's no metro or tram system and bus services are difficult to get to grip with. Local taxi's and ride-hailing cabs are really your only options in getting around but they are reliable and plenty of. Getting a taxi to the circuit each day is never difficult and there are always plenty of drivers around the circuit after the race ready to whisk you off to your destination.
Once you are on Yas Island there are free shuttle busses making it easy for fans to get around the different areas of Yas Island.
International Travel
Abu Dhabi is served by most of the main airlines in the world as well as some of the low cost carriers from Europe and Asia meaning there are plenty of options when it comes to flights. As always with a big sporting event which is the centre of attention in that particular city it's best to book as early as possible, but there are still deals you can find.
When arriving into Abu Dhabi for 2024's Golf Championship, you'll also be welcomed by Abu Dhabi's brand new airport terminal.
